How to Write a Nursing Essay

How to Write a Nursing Essay

Nursing is often regarded as a the least academic of subjects, a field in which the skills required for academic essay writing are irrelevant. However, nursing demands a significant amount of clear and accurate writing, often produced under tight time constraints. Whether it is filling out reports or recording your interactions with patients and other health professionals, you must be able to record detailed information in writing clearly, concisely, fairly and accurately.

Writing at University, and in the Workplace

Writing essays may seem alien to the practical side of your training as a nurse, but it is important that you are able to demonstrate a sound academic understanding of nursing theory and practice. Although you may find the prospect of writing academic essays daunting, learning to write well will be of great benefit, not only during your time at university, but also for your subsequent career as a practising nurse.

University essays in nursing require you to integrate information from a variety of sources, to strike an optimal balance between description and analysis, and to critically discuss theoretical issues with reference to relevant practical examples. Written examinations will provide an opportunity for you to demonstrate your ability to synthesise information and find solutions to problems under tight time constraints, just as you will be required to do in clinical practice.

Structure and Style

A clear, coherent structure is essential for any academic essay. Structure helps the author to retain focus on the topic and to discuss it in a way that is readily understandable to the reader. You should always aim to convey your ideas in as accessible a manner as possible. This means that your essay should have a clear beginning, middle and end, and that you use appropriate signposting to guide the reader through the work. Your spelling and grammar should be faultless, and you should you should always aim to make your writing clear, simple and concise.

Introducing the Topic

In academic writing as in life more generally, first impressions count. An introduction is often the most difficult part of an essay to compose, but it is always worth devoting the time needed to get it right. A strong introduction should:

  • clearly and precisely identify the topic and objective of the essay;
  • grab the reader’s attention;
  • sketch your argument, thesis, or answer; and
  • provide any necessary background or context.

Signposting the work

The final paragraph of your introduction should provide the reader with a roadmap for what is to follow, by detailing what is covered in each section. Throughout the essay, make use of the signpost principle: every step in the argument should be clearly marked out, and the reader should never be left wondering where an argument is going or why a particular point is being made. Subheadings should be used to guide the reader, and figures and tables may be used where they help to make a point more clearly and concisely.

Developing the main body of the essay

It is advisable to divide your essay up into sections which reflect the structure of your discussion and help the reader navigate through the essay. Within each section the discussion should be divided into paragraphs, with each paragraph devoted to a single claim that builds upon that which preceded it. Your argumentation and evidence should support the claim of each paragraph, and each paragraph should support your overall thesis. Padding out your essay with tangential or redundant information will not earn you marks.

Reaching a Conclusion

Too many student papers end abruptly without providing proper conclusions. A  conclusion should not be a word-for-word restatement of the thesis but rather a succinct summary of the main points you have made in the body of the paper. You might then briefly gesture towards the wider implications of your argument. However, a conclusion is not the place to introduce new claims, evidence or arguments, which betrays poor essay planning.
